So they have this thing here in Singapore. It's called a hawker center. Actually there are many of them. You know how when you go to a mall in the US and there is always a food court filled with greasy food? Well, it's like that except the food is known to be exceptional and incredibly cheap. Also, these centers are usually outdoors with some fans and some canopies. They have many stalls and each stall offers something different.
The plan was to go for a walk around the block, but we stumbled upon a very small hawker center and wanted to check it out. The kids got a whiff and suddenly were hungry.
It was only 9:30 in the morning, but Ted told them if they found something they wanted, he would get it for them. They were off to find something.
I thought this "western" food stall was funny. I guess western means fried chicken? Only here the prized pieces are legs and thighs (and wings I guess), definitely not the breasts. The sign made me laugh, "whip potato" for only 70 cents? I didn't try it, so I can't report on the western booth.
Ella decided on some fried noodles with mushroom and pork sausage on top and a bowl of chicken dumpling soup.
The noodles were a hit.
Hmmmm, eating them with a fork and the soup spoon was too messy I guess.
so it was time to use the chopsticks. Daddy knows what he's doing and gave the girls some pointers.
Ella picked it right up. Zoe was a little too (understandably) impatient. Wy just wanted fed. They cleaned the plate and the bowl! As for Zoe, her choice was a dessert from a booth that didn't open in time for our trip. We promised that we would go back another day. She had enjoyed E's choice anyway.
The last picture is not from the hawker center, but from a trip we took later that afternoon. We had to visit the Ministry of Manpower to finalize all the visa stuff. This was a sign in that building and it made me very happy to see. Ahhhh, we are surrounded by restaurants and pubs. I can relax now.
These are all pictures from yesterday (Friday). Today (Saturday) has been the best day by far. The weather was hot--although it rained pretty hard three different times. We took one of those bus tours of the city area and even though I usually think stuff like that is lame, it was the perfect thing to do so early in our visit in order to familiarize ourselves with the general area. We took a ton of pictures and I'll post them tomorrow, but for now, Ted just put three very tired children to bed, and now we're going to each have a well-deserved beer.
