Random Touring Stuff

Most of the time, the blog posts are about one particular outing or event, but now that we have settled into our home for the year, we don't have big trips. Sometimes when the weekend hits, we just relax. It happens. Lately we have gotten into a habit of having one big outing per weekend and then keeping it close to home for the rest of it. We usually eat a picnic lunch both days and have dinners out both weekend nights. The girls have two Chinese lessons a week and one of them is Sunday at 4. After that, we head to one of our neighborhood food centres and have a nice big Chinese dinner.

Then Monday rolls around and it's back to the grind. Play, homework, and maybe swimming in the morning. Then, the kids head off to school. When Wyatt and Zoe get home, we have a snack and play for a bit before I turn on the TV (if they remember to ask) while I make dinner. Eleanor and Ted get home at about the same time. We eat around 7 and get ready for bed pretty quickly after that.

This post includes some highlights of our casual life as well as some photos from our small excursions that don't warrant a post of their own.

During the Chinese New Year holiday, the museums were free of charge. We checked out the Philatelic Museum first. We walked through this park along the way.

Inside, we learned more than we knew we wanted to learn about stamps and how the mail works in Singapore. It was actually a fairly fascinating and fun museum. The kids played and loved it.

There was a whole lot of information about the history of Singapore. Here, the girls try on traditional wooden shoes.

Lots of mailbox models from around the world.

My favorite was this small collection from China. The green box is for express mail, blue for ordinary, and pink for love letters. How efficient is that!

Because we are heading into the year of the snake, there was a large snake display. We missed the live ones, though.

The kids loved this "antique" phone. Wow, I am old.

Another day, we let the kids decide what we would do and of course they picked to ride the cable cars (or as Wyatt says, "able cards") to Sentosa. We were excited to check out a big flower show going on there and we discovered another, even better beach than the one we usually visit. This one has a playground and sprinklers and all kinds of crazy stuff. And delicious Indian food, too.

Here is the Jewel Box area that leads to the cable car entrance. Along with most of Singapore, it is decorated with red and golden coxcomb for Chinese New Year.

Here is the area known as Palawan Beach. Note the approaching storm.

Because my sister-in-law has created this blog, Monsters Are Reals, we had to take note of this trash can (rubbish bin).

The kids were a little nervous, but they really wanted to feed him.

After the beach and snacks, we walked through some of the flower displays.

And we found the god (and goddess?) of prosperity.

For our hike this weekend, we visited Jurong Lake Park. We had hoped to visit the Chinese Gardens but there was a special New Year event happening. It also was drizzling a little for most of the morning.

The highlight was definitely the zip lines.

Then we found a spot by the lake for a quick picnic before the rain came.

The rain was light and ended quickly so we decided to keep walking past the car park. On the other side was a mega-playground.

We stayed there for so long that we grew hungry again. On the drive home, we stopped at Picotin for pizzas and fresh beers. It poured while we were here, but we were under a big awning so we stayed mostly dry. The kids looked around for the bunnies in the hutches we visited last time we were here, but the bunnies were gone.

Another night, we went to one of our favorite places for dinner and drinks, Red Dot in Dempsey Hill. They have great micro-brews and if we had a couple more beer-drinkers in our party they would bring these little super-mini-keg dispensers to the table. Ted and I order in pints. This night we were there for Happy Hour so we ordered an all finger-food appetizer style meal. The kids were thrilled.
